Located about 700 km from Bangkok and 40 km from the east coast of Southern Thailand. It has white sandy beaches, coral reefs and coconut palms. In June 2008, Samuyu was granted the official municipal status of an independent city. Koh Samui is surrounded by about sixty other islands, most of which are Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park, but there are other resorts such as Ko Pha Ngan, Tau and Ko Nang Yuan.
The old capital Nathon, on the southwest coast of the island, is still the main port for fishing and inter-island transport.
Has only two distinct climatic seasons. The rainy season is from May to December and the dry season is from January to April.
The island has a population of about 45,000, whose main income is tourism, the export of rubber and coconuts.
Koh Samui Airport is a private airport built by Bangkok Airways , the main operator. The airport is also served by Thai Airways International . There are 27 flights from the airport to Bangkok, 23 of which are daily. In addition, there are flights to Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Pattaya and Phuket.
You can get from the island to the mainland by
ferries . High-speed passenger catamarans are located on the piers of Maenam and Nathon, and passenger and transport ferries in Nathon and Lipa Noi. Catamarans cover the distance in about 40 minutes, and heavy ferries - in 1.5 hours. Regular running boats connect Koh Samui with Surat Thani and Phangan. Once a day, a boat leaves for Tao Island.
Public transport on Koh Samui - songthaew (a pickup truck, the back of which is covered with an awning, with benches installed under it for sitting or without seats, but with handles to hold on), taximeters and motorcycle taxis.
Modern Koh Samui is the second most popular island in Thailand after Phuket. Koh Samui has become famous among divers for its beautiful corals and fish.
The entire coastline of Koh Samui is divided into beaches, most of which are named after villages, coves or headlands in the neighborhood. There are 34 beaches in Koh Samui. Most Popular:
-Chaweng - located on the east coast of Koh Samui. Almost a straight line with fine white sand and the most beautiful sea color on the entire island. In special seasons, with strong waves, dangerous RIP currents are encountered. The main entertainment venues, clubs, bars and restaurants are concentrated on Chaweng. The island's informal entertainment capital.
-Chaweng Noi - similar to Chaweng, but with a smaller size. There are many areas with stones at the bottom, and the entire coastline is closed by luxury segment hotels. you can get to the beach only through the territory of one of the hotels.
-Tong Takian - also called Yacht Club Beach, Crystal Bay Beach and Silver Beach. In fact, these are the names of three hotels that stand in this bay.
-Lem Nan is a shallow area of the sea on the outskirts of the popular Lamai. Lots of expensive hotels and quietness. The sea is not suitable for swimming, there are many stones at the bottom, but very beautiful landscapes.
- Lamai is the second most popular beach on the island. There is excellent sea here, especially in the southern part of the bay, and granite boulders perfectly complement the landscape. The sea is deep, there are often waves, depending on the season, there are RIP currents. There is little shade, the beach is wide, 40-60 meters.
-Rockes Beach - located along the hotel of the same name. Sometimes it is called Lamai, but it is separated from Lamai by rocks, among which are popular among tourists Hin Ta Hin Yai - "Grandmother and Grandfather".
-Nahai is a favorite spot for kitesurfers. Shallow water and a bottom clear of stones, a convenient access to the beach, low crowds - all these are advantages for those who like to parachute over the waves. There are several kitesurfer schools on the shore and many expensive resorts, the staff of which swears at the kitesurfers.
-Natien - located across the headland from Nahai. Built up with expensive hotels, a very beautiful place, a magnificent sea.
-Lipa Noy - located south of Nathon. There are several seafood restaurants. The shallow sea is characteristic - you can move away from the coast for 200 meters, and the water will be only waist-deep. Lipa Noi is home to the Raja Ferry pier, one of the three main carriers by sea.
-Menam - 4 kilometers long, located in the northern part of Koh Samui. The first hotels of Koh Samui were built on this beach. Not far from the coast is a Chinese-style village. It houses a large number of cafes, restaurants and diving equipment rental companies. There are 2 berths on Maenam - one for high-speed catamarans and the other for boats sailing to Phang Nga Bay, Ang Thong National Marine Park, Tao and Nang Yuan islands. It is considered a family beach due to the features of the infrastructure and palm grove, in the shade of which you can not worry about sunstroke.
-Bang Po is a light version of the popular Manam. Here the sea is shallower, the water is slightly muddy, but there are much fewer people. There are tons of good restaurants, including the only children's restaurant on Koh Samui, with a decent playground and soft furnishings.
-Ban Tai is the best place for families with children (after Chongmon). Shallow bottom, clean sand, behind the cape there is a rocky coast where nudists can hide. The Mimosa's restaurant has a small playground. The beach is often called Mimosa, after the hotel and restaurant, the largest on the coast.
-The beach of the W-Retreat hotel is located between the rocks and under the slope of the mountain, on which there is an expensive hotel, you can drive here only through the hotel's checkpoint and under strict supervision. Due to its belonging to the hotel and the corresponding contingent of tourists, the beach is the cleanest and most well-groomed on the island.
-Bophut - located in the northeastern part of Koh Samui, and stretches for 3 kilometers. There is a pier on Bophut Beach, from which boats leave for Phangan, Tao, Nang Yuan and Ang Thong National Marine Park, and along the entire beach line there are cafes, bars and restaurants.
-Bang Rak - the proximity to the airport and the availability of many hotels makes this place convenient for those arriving to the island by air.
-Tongsai is a very beautiful beach, which is suitable for families with children. There are stones at the bottom, shallow, but you can swim quite comfortably. There are only two or three hotels on the shore, behind a large rock to the south there is a private beach where nudists like to sunbathe.
-Chong Mon - is located on the northeastern tip of Koh Samui, east of Big Buddha Beach, 1 kilometer long. There are mainly large hotels offering a variety of water sports.
